Service Projects of Friends in Africa

  • American Friends Service Committee: Is a Quaker organization based in Philadelphia, in the United States. They have regional offices in Africa, one for the Great Lakes in Burundi and for Southern Africa in Lesotho. Their main focus is on peace initiatives, relief and rehabilitation in conflict areas and development. Website: www.afsc.org
  • Rural Service Programme: Provides assistance to Kenyans at a grass roots level in the form of agricultural advice, micro loans, water management, water catchment protection, construction of rain water harvesting devices, fireless cookers, etc..
    Right Sharing of World Resources: Quaker funding agency, which channels funds from American Friends to developing countries, with a focus on micro enterprise. Website: www.rswr.org
  • Hlekweni Friends Rural Service: Hlekweni was founded by Quakers, and has provided skills training in Matabeleland, Zimbabwe, since 1967. Provides six month courses in agriculture, building, carpentry, child care, metalwork and garment making.   • Friends Learning Resources: Is a non-profit organization that provides books of an educational and spiritual nature. Makes use of volunteers so books can be sold at a minimal price to schools in Kenya.
